The party's Election Coordination Committee's convener Muhiuddin Khan
Alamgir filed a written petition to the EC on Sunday with the request.
"We
have requested for proper action to stop the violence in polling
centres. We have filed an application on behalf of the party to the EC,"
he told mediapersons after meeting Election commissioner Md Shahnewaz.
According
to the Awami League leader, voter turnout was low in the morning due to
cold weather, but it is increasing as the day progressed.
The
former home minister said that the Opposition's strike has not affected
the polls, though his party sought EC's intervention to stop violence.
The
BNP-led Opposition alliance has been enforcing a non-stop nationwide
blockade since Jan 1. They have also called a 48-hour shutdown across
the country from Saturday to thwart the polls.
Opposition
activists have unleashed a campaign of violence, burning down dozens of
polling stations, attacking polling parties and public transport to
cause panic since Friday night.
Alamgir claimed that more than 500
people died in the last few months in violence caused by BNP-Jamaat and
said: "those responsible would be bought under justice."
The Election Commission is, however, yet to react to the Awami League's petition.
