US Ambassador to Dhaka Earl R Miller passed a busy time on Thursday, on the final day of his three-day visit to Barisal region. The ambassador visited 200-year-old floating market at Bhimruli in Jhalakathi on Thursday morning.


Miller reached the market at around 9:00am and took a boat ride to visit the historic market and talked to the businessmen and local people.
Md Johar Ali, deputy commissioner of Jhalakathi and Fatiha Yasmin, superintend of police greeted him with the flower bouquets.

Earlier on Wednesday, he visited the architecture site of Karapur Mia Bari Mosque in the outskirts of the city, and Jahanara-Israil School and College.

Earl R Miller, on his first voyage to a coastal region, came to Barisal on Tuesday afternoon by Green Line Waterways' vessel.

He is scheduled to leave the city for Dhaka by air, on Thursday.

Bishwajit killer Shakil remanded

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the key accused of Bishwajit Das killing case, on an eight-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after Tajul Islam, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced Shakil before it seeking a 10-day remand. In the forwarding report, Tajul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Shakil is the prime accused in the case. They identified Shakil from photos and video footages of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka. So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the IO said. 78.67pc pass HSC exam

Dhaka, Jul 18 This year 78.67 percent has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations and 61,162 got GPA-5. The Education Minister Nurul Islam has submitted a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban Wednesday morning. Chairmen of different education boards were present there. Last year, 75.08 percent passed the HSC and equivalent examinations and 39,759 got GPA-5. This year Sylhet board has the highest passing rate of 85.37 percent. Dhaka board follows with 81.89 percent, Comilla with 74.56, Rajshahi 78.44 percent, Dinajpur 75.41 percent, Chittagong 72.29 percent, Jessore 67.87 percent and Barisal with 66.98 percent. The pass rate under the Madrasah board is 91.77 percent while the vocational board has 84.32 percent successful students.
