The court
of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman rejected the bail petition of
the Opposition leaders on Tuesday.
Police had sought 7 day remand for the
BNP leaders in a case of the killing of sub-inspector Shahjahan on May 5, the
day Hifazat-e Islam held a rally in Dhaka.
The court ordered two days in
police custody for the BNP leaders following the hearing.
The court
rejected the police's plea for a 20-day remand, in two other cases involving
vandalism caused by Hifazat-e-Islam, 10 days each.
It granted the
investigating officers 10 days to question the accused at the jail
gate.
The two BNP leaders were produced before the court for the
hearing.
Sanaullah Miah, Borhan Uddin and Masud Ahmed Talukder argued for
the BNP leaders in the hearing.
Violence erupted in the May 5 rally and
the police had to crack down hard to foil the group from staying put at the
Shapla Chattar in Motijheel.
At least 14 people had been killed in the
violence and clash with law enforcers.
Police had filed 16 cases,
including three murder cases, in connection with the incidents, accusing BNP and
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders along with Hifazat leaders of
involvement.
