Over 100 shanties gutted in Agargaon fire

 

A fire rages through a slum at Agargaon in the capital burning down over 100 shanties on Sunday. 

Over 100 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out at a slum at Agargaon in the capital on Sunday afternoon.No casualty was reported till filing of this report around 2:30pm.
The reason behind the fire that originated around 12:20pm at the slum situated near the Agargaon Police Station could not be known immediately, said Abdul Momen, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Over 100 shanties were gutted in the fire, witnesses said.

Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan had said that several top BNP leaders including the party Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman were involved with the August 21 grenade attack cases, a witness said on Sunday.AHM Hahibur Rahman Bhuiyan, a former additional chief metropolitan magistrate, said this while giving his deposition before a Dhaka court as the 67th witness of the grenade attack cases.

Govt withdraws Padma fund request

 

The government has sent a letter to the World Bank withdrawing the request for financing the Padma bridge project, a WB statement said on Friday.
“The World Bank has taken note of the government's decision of not seeking renewed financing for the Padma bridge,” it said in the statement.
On the other hand, the global lender also said it would not provide the loan for the bridge, the statement added.

Indo-Bangla JRC meeting on Tipai study begins

The two-day second meeting of Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) related to a joint study on Tipaimukh Hydroelectric Project began in the capital on Friday to discuss the possible impacts of the proposed dam on the two neighbouring countries.
Indo-Bangladesh Rivers Joint Commission, Dhaka under the Water Resources Ministry organised the meeting of its subgroup at the state guesthouse Meghna.

Govt ready for Padma funding: Obaidul

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said the government has its own preparation for funding the project.
Besides, the proposals of Malaysia, Chaina and India on financing Padma bridge are under consideration, the communications minister said.
He was talking to news men at Nayanpur of Gazipur after inaugurating the No. 3 package for upgrading Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to four-lane.

BSF picks up youth

 

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) picked up a Bangladeshi youth from Raghunathpur frontier in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj early Friday.
The victim was identified as Tojammal Hossain, 20.
Locals said when Tojammal went near the border pillar no 7/1 to bring cattle at about 3:30 am, BSF troops of Nimtita camp picked him up.
