Ershad asks JP ministers to resign


He gave out the directive while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh at his house at Banani on Wednesday.
“It is my final word that I won’t go to polls. Withdraw your nomination papers if you have filed them,” said Ersahd.

9 killed in blockade violence

DHAKA: At least nine people were killed and scores injured in separate violence across the country on Tuesday, the fourth day of blockade enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Of the nine, six were activists of BNP-Jamaat alliance of Satkhira, Chandpur, Noakhali and Chittagong, one Jubo League activist of Satkhira and rests two of Patuakhali and Chittagong are general people.

Ershad boycotts national polls

DHAKA: Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad on Tuesday declared that his party would not join the next parliamentary elections as other parties are not taking part.
The JP chief came up with the announcement at a press conference at Banani office in the city in the noon.
He said, “I along with my party boycott this national poll as all the political parties are not taking part in the polls.”
The JP leaders, who were submitted nomination papers, were requested to withdraw their nomination papers, he added.

US again urges for dialogue

DHAKA: US ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena urged again the government and oppositions to hold dialogue to find an effective solution for upcoming national election.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the US envoy said US concerned about the recent political unrest and violence which is killing innocent people creating an unhealthy atmosphere.

US believe that it is now more urgent than ever for both major parties to empower trusted lieutenants to undertake constructive dialogue to find a way forward to hold free and fair elections that are credible in the eyes of the Bangladeshi people.

Reshuffle in Dhaka, Khulna admin

DHAKA: The government appointed new divisional commissioner of Dhaka and deputy commissioner of Khulna on Tuesday as per the demand of Election Commissioner (EC).

Additional Secretary of Health and Family Planning Ministry M Zillar Rahman was made Dhaka divisional commissioner.

Besides, deputy project director of identification system for enhancing access to services project, Anis Mahmud was made Khulna deputy commissioner.

Canada dissatisfied over BD unrest

DHAKA: Canada expressed its discontent over the prevailing political unrest and the public sufferings from continuation of violence in Bangladesh.

In a statement, Canadian High Cmmissioner to Dhaka Heather Cruden came up with the assertion on Tuesday.

She urged all parties to end violence and work for a peaceful resolution of the current situation through an effective dialogue.

EU says No poll-time observers if violence

DHAKA: The European Union would not send observers to monitor the upcoming 10th national polls if the political deadlock and nationwide violent activities continue.

William Hanna, the European Union High Commissioner in Dhaka, made the assertion while talking with journalists after a meeting with Chief election commissioner (CEC) at city’s election commission secretariat on Sunday morning.
