A suspected drug trader was killed in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) called a gunfight at Beribadh in Mirpur, Dhaka early Monday. According to the account of the law enforcers, the gunfight ensued after the cohorts of the victims opened fire on the law enforcers and the latter retaliated in their self defence when the law enforcers were conducting drives, reports news agency UNB.
The victim could not be identified yet. Prothom Alo, however, could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family. Quoting assistant police superintendent Saiful Malik (Operation Officer) of RAB-2, UNB also reports that two RAB members were injured during the 'gunfight' with the 'drug traders'.
The law enforcers recovered two foreign pistols and some drugs from the spot. Malaysia-based newspaper New Straits Times, quoting rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, reported that around 200 people were killed till July since the anti-drug crackdown in May.
