Patient forced out, vehicle torched

Shutdown activists in Chittagong have stopped an auto-rickshaw carrying a pregnant woman and set it on fire.
The incident took place near MA Aziz Stadium on Sunday, the first day of 18-Party alliance’s 60-hour strike, said bdnews24.com photographer Sumon Babu from the scene.

The patient was being taken to a hospital in that auto-rickshaw by her relatives. Pickets stopped it before setting it ablaze after forcing the people out of the vehicle.

Nahida Khanom Kajol, a relative of the patient who was riding the vehicle, said, “They did not listen even when we said there is a patient with us.”

Police arrived a few moments after the shutdown supporters set the auto-rickshaw on fire.

The woman was later taken to the hospital in a rickshaw.

However, CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (north) Md Shahidullah told bdnews24.com, “Police are vigilant.”

“Strike supporters have held processions and rallies. No large-scale violence took place in the city.”

There was strong police presence during Sunday’s strike in the port city and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami were not seen enforcing it to the fullest though some sporadic incidents did take place.

A procession led by BNP city unit President Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury came out in Mehedibagh at around 7am Sunday, witnesses said.

The pro-shutdown procession dispersed at GEC Intersection where the supporters held a brief rally. Small processions from other parts of the city also congregated there.

Traffic was comparatively thin, restricting commuters, letting rickshaws dominate the city streets.
