5 killed in Dhamrai road accident


DHAMRAI, DHAKA: At least five people, including a woman were, killed and 50 others injured in a road accident in Joypura Bus Stand area under Dhamrai Thana on Wednesday evening.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Hanif loses PM aide post

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular on Sunday evening relieving Hanif of his duties.
Ministry officials said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the directive to issue his dismissal order.

It means the politician from Kushtia will wield no power having lost the PMO job.

Earlier in the evening, Senior Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration Abdus Sobhan Sikdar told bdnews24.com Hanif was going to be fired.

"I am supposed to receive a file regarding that. But I haven't got it yet. It'll take some time more," Sikdar had said.

Hanif had earlier dismissed media report about him being asked to resign as “nothing but a mere rumour”.
A report published in a national daily on Oct 12 claimed the Prime Minister during a view-exchange programme with grassroots leaders advised her special assistant to resign and visit an electoral area to find out the public opinion there.

Shutdown activists in Chittagong have stopped an auto-rickshaw carrying a pregnant woman and set it on fire.
The incident took place near MA Aziz Stadium on Sunday, the first day of 18-Party alliance’s 60-hour strike, said bdnews24.com photographer Sumon Babu from the scene.

The patient was being taken to a hospital in that auto-rickshaw by her relatives. Pickets stopped it before setting it ablaze after forcing the people out of the vehicle.

At an urgent press briefing at the Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday evening, Khaleda's Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan said the 60-hour nationwide shutdown starting from Sunday cannot be called off.

The emergency briefing was called after archrivals Hasina and Khaleda spoke over the phone for about 37 minutes. The Prime Minister invited Khaleda to dialogue over dinner.

Khaleda says AL govt “illegal” after Thursday

DHAKA: Opposition BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday claimed that the incumbent government would be “illegal” from Friday (October 25) as the tenure of the government expires Thursday.
“The tenure of the government is going to be expired Thursday and from the Friday the government will be illegal. It’s our duty to stage movement against the illegal government as citizens of the country,” she said.
The Leader of the Opposition came up with the assertion while addressing a rally organized by pro-BNP teachers at the National Press Club.

October 25 rally in Dhaka DMP permits BNP on 13 conditions

DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) allowed 18-party alliance to hold rally October 25 at Shurawardy Uddyan instead of Nayapaltan on 13 conditions.

DMP source confirmed the matter to banglanews on Thursday afternoon.

The conditions include- BNP can’t use mike outside of Suhrawardy Udyan, sufficient security personnel should be deployed, no gatherings will be allowed outside the Udyan, rally stage can’t shift where police fixed, all have to leave the venue within 5pm on the day and none can carry any lethal weapon.

Google Chrome adds parental controls

DHAKA: Google has introduced controls to its Chrome web browser that allow parents to monitor and control the browsing behaviour of their children.

The new feature, called "supervised users", allows "managers" to set up profiles of the people they want to monitor.

Managers can view the supervised users` browsing history, block specific sites, and approve access requests.

As DMP denies AL won’t hold rally on Oct 25

DHAKA: Ruling Awami League decided not to hold rally in the capital on October 25 Friday as they did not get permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

However party’s leaders and activists will take position in all points of the capital and mosque, so that BNP-Jamaat activists could not unleash violence on the day.

Manna Dey dies at 94

DHAKA: Legendary singer Manna Dey, one of Indian cinema`s golden voices, died in a Bangalore hospital on Thursday morning. He was 94.
Manna Dey was taken to ICU on Wednesday to be treated for respiratory illness and renal failure. He has been in and out of hospital the last few months and was on dialysis in September.
Born Prabodh Chandra Dey in 1919 and known by his nickname Manna, he sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri.

Khaleda reiterates Polls only under non-party govt

DHAKA: BNP Chairperson and Opposition leader Khaleda Zia reiterated that her party would participate in the national election if it is held only under a non-party government.
Khaleda Zia came up with the assertion rejecting apparently Prime Minister’s recent proposal on formulation of all-party government for holding the upcoming general elections.

DMP bans city rallies from Sunday

DHAKA: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed a ban on holding any kind of meeting, procession and rally in the capital for an indefinite period from Sunday morning to avert anarchy and confrontation.

The ban will start from 6:00am, a source of DMP said.

October 25 rally BNP seeks permission from DMP

DHAKA: The Chief Whip of main opposition BNP Zainul Abdin Farroque sought permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for October 25 rally.
Farroque along with Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie went to DMP commissioner’s office at around 1:30 pm Saturday.
They applied to get permission to hold the rally at city’s Suhrawardy Udyan, Paltan Maidan or at party`s central office in Nayapaltan.

‘No election sans BNP’

DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia categorically said that no election could be held in the country sans BNP.

Quamrul over all-party govt Letter to BNP for talks soon

DHAKA: State Minister for Law Advocate Quamrul Islam categorically said that letter would be sent to opposition party to discuss on Prime Minister’s proposed all-party government system.
He came up with the assertion while addressing a discussion at Dhaka Report’s Unity arranged by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote on Saturday.
Over October 25 rally, Quamrul Islam said, “There will be no collision if administration gives permission to hold the rally in separate places.”

DHAKA: Jatiya Party (JP) presidium Saturday decided to quit ruling grand alliance on October 24, a reliable source confirmed.

Durga Puja concluded

DHAKA: The five-day Durga Puja has been concluded on Monday with the observation of Bijaya Dashami and idols of the goddess Durga immersed in various rivers in the country.
The idols of Goddess Durga, in Dhaka immersed in the river Buriganga. There were processions with the idol towards the river in the afternoon.

Hajj begins in Mecca

MEKKA: Millions of Muslim pilgrims started performing the first phase of the annual hajj on Monday, traveling through packed streets from Mecca’s Grand Mosque to the enormous camp at Mina just outside the Saudi Arabian city.
Islam’s pilgrimage is one of the faith’s five pillars and is a duty for all Muslims once in their lives if they are capable of it.

Phailin panic gripped coastal area

KHULNA: Though cyclonic storm "Phailin", classified as "very severe", is heading for coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh at wind speeds averaging 200 km per hour but panic gripped the people living along the coastal belt of the district.

They recalled their memories of severe storms as Sidr, Aila, Reshmi, Bijli and Nargis which they had experienced earlier.

Stumps on Day-4 of 1st Test Kiwis lead Tigers by 85 runs

DHAKA: The visiting New Zealand took lead by 85 runs in their second innings of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chittagong Saturday.
After the over-40, they reached 117 for one at stumps on day-4 at Jahur Ahmed Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the host scored 501 runs for all wickets after the end of 148.5-over. They resumed Saturday’s innings at 380 for 7.

Singer Arfin Rumi sent to jail

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Saturday sent singer Arfin Rumi to jail in a women and children repression case filed by his wife first Ananya.
Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman passed the order after hearing on the case.
The court also sent his brother Yasin Rony to jail in the same order.
Earlier, police arrested Rumi early Saturday from his Mohammadpur residence.

War Crimes Trial Alim verdict Wednesday

DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 fixed Wednesday for issuing the verdict in the charges brought against   former BNP leader Abdul Alim for his involvement in crimes against humanity during the war of liberation in 1971.
On September 22, the tribunal led-by Justice Obaidul Hassan concluded the proceedings of the case fixing no date and time for the verdict.

BNP asks to form ‘Sangram Committee’

DHAKA: Opposition BNP has issued a directive to form ‘Sangram Committee’ based on polling centre in a bid to accelerate  the agitation programme of the party in ensuring free and fair elections.

9 districts get new DCs

DHAKA: The government has appointed nine deputy commissioners in nine districts in a latest reshuffle in the public administration.

The Public Administration Affairs issued a gazette notification in this regard on Tuesday.

As per the order, the ministry appointed Director of Prime Minister’s Office deputy secretary Abu Hena Morshed Zaman as DC to Faridpur, DCC south regional executive officer M Abul Kalam Azad to Netrokona, Deputy Director at BPATC at Savar AKM Shamimul Haque Siddiqui to Pirojpur, Deputy Secretary of Economic Relations A Gaffar Khan to Narail.

Eid-ul-Azha on October 16

DHAKA: Eid-ul-Azha, one of the two biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, will be celebrated across the country on October 16 amid religious fervour and gaiety.
The decision came from a National Moon Sighting Committee meeting on Sunday evening at the Islamic Foundation.
The meeting said the moon the Zilhajj month was sighted in Gaibandha and Thakugaon.
This day, the 10th of Zilhajj some 4,000 years ago, Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) offered to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (AS) who willingly submitted to the will of his father to please Allah. But the Almighty in His benign mercy spared Hazrat Ismail (AS) and, instead, sent a ram to be sacrificed.

HC gets 10 new Justices

DHAKA: The government appointed 10 new Justices for the High Court Division of the Supreme Court Sunday.
President M Zillur Rahman gave them appointments under article 95 of the Constitution.
The newly appointed judges are Justice M Nurul Huda Jaydargir, Justice KM Quamrul Quader, Justice M Mujibur Rahman Mia, Justice Mostofa Zaman Islam, Justice Mohammad Ullah, Justice M Khurshid Alam Sarker, Justice AKM Shahidul Karim, Justice M Jahangir Hossain and Justice Abu Taher M Saifur Rahman.

Moudud hospitalised after heart attack

DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed was admitted to a city hospital after he had a cardiac arrest on Sunday noon.

44 Saudi nationals marry Bangladeshis

DHAKA: Some 17 Saudi women got married to Bangladeshis last year. However, 27 Saudi men married Bangladeshi women.

Under Saudi rules, a Saudi woman can take a foreign husband only if she is at least 25 years old. The age can be lowered to 21 if she proves that she is a close relative of the groom.

A Saudi man has to be at least 30 years old to marry a non-Saudi woman and the age can be brought down to 25 if there is a close family relation between them.

PM says Women to suffer if BNP comes

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday alleged that women’s development would be hindered if BNP assumes power.
She said: “Conspiracy is on against women who are a driving force behind the country’s economy; BNP will throw them inside houses after assuming power implementing ‘Tentul Tattya’.”
The premier was addressing a mass gathering of professionals at Bangabandhu International Convention Center in the capital on Sunday.

Sanjay released for 2 weeks

DHAKA: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was temporarily released Tuesday from an Indian prison where he is serving time for illegal possession of weapons linked to the 1993 terror attack in the financial capital of Mumbai.
The 54-year-old actor said he would spend his two weeks of leave, granted by prison authorities for good behaviour, at home with his family.
