62 foreign friends honoured

Bangladesh on Saturday conferred awards on 62 more foreign friends for their outstanding contributions to the country's Liberation War 41 years ago.
The foreign friends' support came when Bangalees stood up against the atrocities and genocide and contributed to the eventful emergence of sovereign Bangladesh through a nine-month war.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ceremonially handed over "Muktijuddho Moitri Sammanana" (Friends of Liberation War Honour) to them at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Captain (Retd) AB Tajul Islam and award recipient Jagdish C Sharma, a former army officer and ambassador of India, addressed the function.
President Zillur Rahman was absent in the ceremony due to his illness.

Among the recipients, 60 personalities and two organisations from 10 countries received the awards. They are mostly from India and others are from USA, Russia, France, Australia, UK, Sweden, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan.
Among the prominent figures are late Illa Mitra, late Prof Satyen Bose, late singer Hemanta Kumar Mukhapadhay, late Ritwik Ghatak, Late Sunil Gangopadhaya, late literature Tara Sankar Bandyopadhaya, eminent singer Manna Dey, Syed Asif Shahkar, late Shri Prabodh Candra, late Maqbool Fida Husain and late William AS Ouderland Bir Protik
This was the fourth phase of awarding foreign friends since the government first conferred honour on late Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Her daughter-in-law and Congress President Sonia Gandhi received the honour on her behalf on July 25, 2011.
In the second phase, Bangladesh awarded 83 with "Bangladesh Liberation War Honour" and "Friends of Liberation War Honour" on March 27 and 61 received the state honour in the third phase on October 20 this year

Bishwajit killer Shakil remanded

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Rafiqul Islam Shakil, the key accused of Bishwajit Das killing case, on an eight-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after Tajul Islam, an inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police, produced Shakil before it seeking a 10-day remand. In the forwarding report, Tajul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Shakil is the prime accused in the case. They identified Shakil from photos and video footages of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka. So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the IO said. 78.67pc pass HSC exam

Dhaka, Jul 18 This year 78.67 percent has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations and 61,162 got GPA-5. The Education Minister Nurul Islam has submitted a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban Wednesday morning. Chairmen of different education boards were present there. Last year, 75.08 percent passed the HSC and equivalent examinations and 39,759 got GPA-5. This year Sylhet board has the highest passing rate of 85.37 percent. Dhaka board follows with 81.89 percent, Comilla with 74.56, Rajshahi 78.44 percent, Dinajpur 75.41 percent, Chittagong 72.29 percent, Jessore 67.87 percent and Barisal with 66.98 percent. The pass rate under the Madrasah board is 91.77 percent while the vocational board has 84.32 percent successful students. Sircar, Akhtar Hamid get bail

Judge Mohammad Zahirul Haque of the Senior Special Judges' Court in Dhaka granted them bail after they surrendered before the court in the morning and sought bail in the cases. The court fixed January 10 for passing an order on whether it would take the charges into cognisance. The ACC on December 28, 2010 filed the cases with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The anti-graft watchdog pressed charges against Jamir Uddin and Akhtar Hamid on November 7 and 8 this year respectively.
